For the first year since Covid, Medieval Studies’ beloved Study Tour: Medieval Spain took a group of 22 undergraduate students on the Camino de Santiago. Professor David Myers and Dr. Christina Bruno led 17 students enrolled in the New York section, who were joined by another 5 who had spent Spring abroad in Granada. The group walked the last 300km (200 miles) of the Camino Frances, one of the oldest pilgrimage routes in Europe, from the city of León to Santiago de Compostela. After reading texts on medieval and modern pilgrimage, students grappled themselves with what it means to be a pilgrim and to go on a pilgrimage, despite coming from a variety of faith and personal backgrounds.

This year, for the first time, the class included recipients of the Richard F. Gyug Prize to subsidize their travel costs. You can read about the winners here.
